Offshore and Alternative Investments

What is your offshore capital meant to do?

Offshore investing can diversify currency, market and jurisdiction exposure, but moving money abroad is not a strategy by itself. Without a clear objective, the result can be unnecessary cost, complexity and fragmented reporting.

What we offer

An offshore allocation with a defined role.

Outcome focus

A solid teal right-pointing chevron arrow.
We begin with the outcome: future foreign spending, currency diversification, geographic risk, long-term growth, estate planning or flexibility for a cross-border life. From there, we assess the appropriate balance between local and offshore assets, the required liquidity, the investment horizon, tax and reporting obligations, and the structure or jurisdiction being considered.

Offshore practicalities

We also consider succession planning across jurisdictions, the practicalities of managing assets held offshore day to day, and how offshore holdings should be reported for South African tax purposes. This is particularly relevant where the capital originates as retained earnings or surplus cash extracted from a business, since the offshore decision often follows directly from the extraction decision.

Bespoke strategies

Alternative asset classes and bespoke, specifically mandated portfolios are used only where they strengthen the wider plan and where the trade-offs are clear. Bespoke describes a mandated approach, a portfolio built around a specific client's chosen instruments, rather than a distinct asset class, and sits alongside offshore and alternative investments as one connected part of what this page covers.

Single Discretionary Allowance

A solid teal right-pointing chevron arrow.
South African residents aged 18 and older currently have a R2 million Single Discretionary Allowance per calendar year. It needs no stated reason and does not accumulate: an allowance not used this year is gone, not carried forward.

Foreign Investment Allowance

Transfers above the Single Discretionary Allowance fall under the Foreign Investment Allowance, currently up to R10 million per calendar year. These require an Approval for International Transfer through SARS eFiling, a valid Tax Compliance Status pin, and documentation confirming the source of funds.

When figures change

These limits and the approval process change periodically. We confirm the applicable figures and requirements against current SARS and South African Reserve Bank rules at the time a transfer is planned, rather than relying on a figure from a previous year.

How we think about it

Diversification is not a destination.

Offshore assets should integrate with your overall financial strategy. We assess their impact on cash flow, taxes, estate planning, and risk, adjusting as your goals or circumstances evolve. The focus is on strategic diversification, not reacting to uncertainty.

An offshore allocation set several years ago may no longer suit your circumstances, the exchange rate at the time it was made, or current regulation. We review it against where you are now, not where you were when it was first structured.

Let’s talk

Give the offshore allocation a clearer mandate.

Share what you already hold, what you are considering and what the capital needs to achieve. We will help you assess the structure in context.
